Pulsed Optomechanics: QND measurement of mechanical motions via optical pulses

An outstanding problem in cavity quantum optomechanics is to establish back-action evading measurement of mechanically moving objects with imprecision below standard quantum limit (SQL). Such measurement would enable quantum state tomography of mechanical states and preparation of mechanical quantum states by measurement itself. We intend to realize this quantum non-demolition (QND) measurement of mechanical states beyond SQL by using a new experimental approach. Our method uses short optical pulses to probe the instantaneous position of a mechanical oscillator, while imposing the measurement back-action only on to the conjugate momentum quadrature. In addition, we aim at demonstrating squeezed states and Heisenberg limited coherent states of mechanical oscillators.
